The Austin 1300 was the larger-engined evolution of the 1100, using the 1,275cc A-series engine in the same Pininfarina-styled body with Hydrolastic suspension. It offered modestly better performance without altering the essential formula.
The Car
Produced from 1967 to 1974, the 1300 replaced the 1100 at the top of the range. The 1300GT added twin carburettors and a close-ratio gearbox for mildly sporting character. As with the 1100, the car was badged as Austin, Morris, MG, Vanden Plas, Riley, and Wolseley depending on trim and market. The Vanden Plas Princess 1300 with its leather interior and walnut dashboard is the most refined variant.
Buying
All the same concerns as the 1100 apply: terminal rust has claimed most survivors. The A-series engine and gearbox are well-supported. Hydrolastic suspension needs attention. The 1300GT is the variant with emerging collector interest. The Metro eventually replaced the 1100/1300 concept in Austin’s range, though it took over a decade and several corporate crises to get there.
