Austin-Healey 3000 Generation / Variant Price Guides
The Austin-Healey 3000 is the definitive Big Healey; a three-litre straight-six sports car that ran from 1959 to 1967 and became one of the most successful British open-top cars of its era. It was quick, noisy, handsome, and fundamentally straightforward to maintain. In its final BJ8 MkIII form it was also genuinely fast by any contemporary standard, capable of 150mph given the appropriate road.
The Lineage
Three marks (with the MkII subdivided by the significant BJ7 revision) trace the 3000’s development from the raw, drum-braked original to the wood-dashed, wind-up-windowed, servo-braked BJ8 that closed the run in 1967. The essential mechanicals barely changed throughout: a BMC C-series 2,912cc straight-six, four-speed manual with optional overdrive, front disc and rear drum brakes, coil-spring independent front suspension, and a live rear axle on leaf springs located by a Panhard rod. What changed was refinement, power, and equipment. Each generation adding comfort without entirely sacrificing the raw character that made the original compelling.
Which to Choose
The MkI is the purest and most affordable. The MkII BJ7 is the sweet spot, more refined than the MkI, rarer than the MkIII, and with the convertible hood that transforms usability. The MkIII BJ8 is the most powerful, most luxurious, and most valuable. Any 3000 with competition history carries a significant premium and requires exhaustive provenance verification.
Buying
The ladder-frame chassis is the 3000’s structural priority. A minor shunt can bend a main rail without obvious external evidence, so always check for straight running and consistent panel gaps. Rust attacks the sills, floor panels, and the area around the battery. The C-series six is robust but oil-tight it is not; leaks are normal but heavy consumption warrants investigation. The Austin-Healey Club register and established specialists such as Rawles and Dennis Welch are the essential resources before any purchase.
