The Audi SQ7 is a large performance SUV that uses either a 4.0-litre TDI diesel V8 with an electric supercharger (early cars) or a 4.0-litre TFSI twin-turbo petrol V8 (from 2020) to deliver serious performance from a car that weighs over 2.3 tonnes.

The Car

The original diesel SQ7 produced 435bhp and used an electrically powered compressor to eliminate turbo lag at low revs; a world first in a production car. The 2020 petrol SQ7 raised output to 507bhp from the twin-turbo TFSI V8 shared with the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus. Quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed torque converter automatic are standard. Air suspension provides a comfortable ride that belies the car’s performance capabilities.

Buying

The diesel V8 with its electric compressor is the more technologically interesting car but the compressor system can develop faults that are expensive to repair. The petrol V8 is more straightforward. Both are thirsty. The SQ7 sits alongside the SQ8 in Audi’s performance SUV range; the Q8 offering a more rakish roofline on a shared platform.
