The Audi S8 is the performance A8; the flagship saloon with considerably more power and a sportier chassis tune, aimed at buyers who want a chauffeur-spec car that can also embarrass sports cars when the driver takes over. Every generation has been a subtle but devastating machine.
The Range
Four generations from D2 to D5 track the A8’s development. The D2 used a V8; the D3 a V10; the D4 a 4.0 TFSI V8; the current D5 a 4.0 TFSI with mild-hybrid assistance producing 571bhp. The S8 Plus variants in D4 and D5 generations are the most extreme expressions, with 605bhp and 630bhp respectively.
Buying
The S8 is a consistent bargain in the performance luxury saloon market. Why? Depreciation from new prices is steep, and the result is extraordinary performance at attainable used prices. The D4 S8 Plus is the most collectable. All generations require honest assessment of running costs.
