The C4 S4, produced from 1991 to 1994, was the original; a 2.2-litre five-cylinder with twin turbos producing 227bhp in the saloon, later raised to 230bhp. It was the car that established the S4 as a genuine rival to the BMW M3 rather than merely a faster A4.
The Car
The C4 S4 used Audi’s inline five-cylinder in turbocharged form, driving all four wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox and the torsen-based quattro system. The result was 0–62mph in 5.4 seconds from a practical saloon with the quattro’s all-weather traction. A C4 S4 Avant estate was also produced in smaller numbers. The biturbo setup used sequential turbochargers to reduce lag, pretty advanced for a production car in the early 1990s.
Buying
The C4 S4 is now a sought-after collector’s car, particularly the Avant. The five-cylinder biturbo cooling system requires attention; the complex plumbing is prone to leaks on ageing cars. The Audi Torsen quattro on this generation is the more engaging system compared to later Haldex-based cars. Rust on the body is possible; inspect sills and wheelarches carefully.
