The data above is based on information retrieved from actual, real-world Audi S3 sales listings. Our AI agents try to correct obvious mistakes sellers make, such as incorrect engine capacities, but some may still fall through.
The 8Y S3, launched in 2020, is the most technically accomplished S3 yet and the first to use a torque-vectoring rear differential that allows the car to behave more like a rear-wheel-drive machine than its quattro architecture would suggest. It is genuinely quick, genuinely composed, and more rewarding to drive than any previous S3.
The Car
The 8Y uses the EA888 Gen 4 2.0 TFSI producing 310bhp with 400Nm, driving all four wheels through a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch and an electronically controlled rear differential. The rear diff can direct torque rearward and across the axle independently, creating a mild yaw effect that sharpens the S3’s responses significantly over the 8V’s more passive system. 0–62mph in 4.8 seconds. Available as a five-door Sportback and, in some markets, a Saloon. The interior adopts Audi’s 8Y-generation architecture; a 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen replacing the previous rotary controller, with the optional virtual cockpit adding a 12.3-inch driver’s display. The physical climate controls were largely replaced by touch-sensitive sliders, which attracted the same criticism here as across the rest of the 8Y A3 range.
What Goes Wrong
Early 8Y S3s suffered software issues causing hesitant DSG behaviour and infotainment freezes but both have been largely addressed through dealer updates. The EA888 Gen 4 is generally reliable but sensitive to oil specification and extended service intervals. DSG fluid changes at 40,000 miles remain important maintenance that some owners overlook. The touch-sensitive climate sliders are frustrating to use in cold weather with gloves. Battery drain from the always-on connectivity systems is faster than older Audis; a trickle charger is worthwhile if the car sits unused for more than two weeks.
Buying
The 8Y S3 is the definitive generation for driving enthusiasts. The rear differential transforms the chassis character in a way that makes it feel genuinely different from an S-line A3, rather than merely faster. The Sportback is the more versatile body. Look for a car with software updates completed and DSG service history documented. The RS3 8Y sits above it with 400bhp, a drift mode, and the five-cylinder sound but at a significant price premium, and for many buyers the S3’s balance of performance and daily refinement is the more satisfying package.
