The Audi S1 was a short-lived hot hatchback that crammed the essential ingredients of the Quattro legend (turbo power and four-wheel drive) into the smallest car in Audi’s range. It was the spiritual successor to the Sport Quattro, compressed into a modern supermini.
The Car
Produced from 2014 to 2018, the S1 used a 2.0-litre TFSI turbo producing 231bhp through a six-speed manual gearbox and Haldex-based quattro all-wheel drive. Kerb weight was 1,315kg. The Sportback five-door was the only body style sold in the UK. Performance was strong: 0–62mph in 5.8 seconds, with a tenacious chassis that clung to the road in conditions that would have lesser hot hatches sliding into hedgerows. The S1 was discontinued when the third-generation A1 dropped the quattro option entirely.
Buying
The S1 has appreciated as a used buy since production ended. The combination of quattro, manual gearbox, and genuine performance in a compact body resonated with enthusiasts who recognised it as the last of a breed. The 2.0 TFSI is well-proven across the VW Group range. Check for turbo and intercooler issues. Clutch wear depends heavily on driving style. The S1 preceded the Q2 in the small Audi range but the two are fundamentally different propositions.
