The original R8, produced from 2007 to 2015, arrived to widespread acclaim and set a standard for naturally aspirated sports car refinement that turbocharged rivals have never quite replicated. The gated manual shifter on early cars has since become one of the most desirable controls in any sports car.
The Car
The Type 42 used a 4,163cc V8 producing 420bhp and, from 2009, a 5,204cc V10 producing 525bhp. The V8 was available with a six-speed gated manual (acclaimed as one of the finest gearboxes ever fitted to a road car) or an R tronic single-clutch automated manual. The V10 used R tronic only. A 2012 facelift standardised the R tronic improvements and added the V10 Plus at 550bhp. The Spyder open-top arrived in 2010.
Buying
The V8 manual is the collector’s R8; gated shifter, naturally aspirated character, and a driving purity that automatic transmissions cannot replicate. The V10 is faster but the V8 manual is more rewarding. The R tronic single-clutch automated manual is the car’s weakest point, jerky in traffic and slow by modern standards. The Audi service network prices R8 maintenance at Lamborghini Gallardo levels — the two cars share components.
