The Audi Q2 is the company’s smallest crossover, designed to bring new buyers into the Audi range with a compact, urban-friendly body and accessible pricing. It is a sensible, well-built small SUV that prioritises refinement over driving excitement.

The Range

Produced from 2016, the Q2 uses the MQB platform shared across the VW Group. Engine options include 1.0 and 1.5-litre TFSI petrols and 1.6 and 2.0-litre TDI diesels. Quattro all-wheel drive is available on the 2.0 TDI and the SQ2, which uses a 300bhp 2.0 TFSI. The SQ2 is a genuinely quick car that hides its performance behind the Q2’s modest exterior. Six-speed manual and seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmissions are offered.

Buying

The 1.0 TFSI is adequate for urban use. The 1.5 TFSI with cylinder deactivation is the sweet spot. Avoid the 1.6 TDI if you do predominantly short journeys as DPF issues are common. The S tronic is smooth but the dual-clutch mechanism can develop judder at low speeds on higher-mileage cars. The Q2 competes with the Mini Countryman and Volvo XC40 in a crowded segment. The A2 was Audi’s previous small car, though the two share nothing beyond the four rings.
