The B3/B4 Audi Coupe, produced from 1988 to 1996, evolved the formula with a more rounded body, the galvanised construction that transformed longevity, and the 20-valve five-cylinder engines that transformed performance. The S2 variant with 220bhp is the definitive expression.
The Car
The B3/B4 used 2.0 and 2.3-litre naturally aspirated five-cylinders alongside the 2.2-litre turbocharged 20v in the S2, producing 220bhp with Quattro. The S2 used Porsche-sourced components including large brake callipers and the steering system. The 2.6 and 2.8-litre V6 engines arrived in 1992. The galvanised body transformed the ownership proposition relative to the B2.
Buying
The S2 Coupe is a modern classic with rising values; fewer were built than the S2 Avant, making it arguably rarer in the configurations most buyers want. The 20v five-cylinder requires correct oil specification and regular changes. The Audi B3/B4 Coupe is the final dedicated Audi Coupe before the TT took the concept in a completely different direction.
