The D4 A8, produced from 2010 to 2017, brought Audi’s then-current matrix LED technology, air suspension with predictive road-reading, and the first hybrid A8 to the flagship. It is the generation that most comprehensively outpaced its rivals on technology, even if BMW’s 7 Series remained the more rewarding driver’s car.

The Car

The D4 used a 3.0 TFSI 290bhp and 4.0 TFSI 435bhp V8 twin-turbo alongside a 3.0 TDI diesel. The S8 used the 4.0 TFSI tuned to 520bhp, with 605bhp in the S8 Plus. The hybrid combined a 2.0 TFSI with an electric motor for improved urban efficiency. Night vision, adaptive cruise, and lane-keeping assist were available from the start of production. A 2014 facelift added matrix LED headlights.

Buying

The S8 Plus is the most extreme road-going A8 produced and is rising in value. The 3.0 TDI is the sensible long-distance choice. The Audi 4.0 TFSI V8 is powerful and smooth but early units had oil consumption issues; check for the piston ring revision. The D4’s technology remains impressive a decade on.
