The current 8Y A3, launched in 2021, is the most sophisticated compact Audi yet. A car whose interior quality and technology have finally closed the gap with the segment-setting BMW 1 Series on the dimensions that matter most to buyers making the choice between them.

The Car

The 8Y uses the MQB Evo platform shared with the latest Golf 8. Engine range covers 1.0 and 1.5 TFSI petrols, 2.0 TDI diesel, and the 2.0 TFSI in 150 and 200bhp S-line form. The S3 produces 310bhp with Quattro all-wheel drive. The interior adopts Audi’s latest architecture with OLED displays replacing most physical controls, which divides opinion but modernises the cabin significantly. No RS3 at launch, arriving in 2022.

Buying

The 8Y is recent enough that major reliability data is still accumulating. The removal of physical climate control buttons in favour of touch-sensitive sliders has drawn consistent criticism. We recommend you try before buying. A 2022-onwards car benefits from software refinements addressing early infotainment bugs. The Audi S3 and RS3 in 8Y form are the performance highlights of the current generation.
