Audi A3 Generation / Variant Price Guides
The Audi A3 is the car that turned Audi into a credible rival to BMW and Mercedes in the premium compact segment. From its 1996 debut it has consistently offered better interior quality, more sophisticated engineering, and stronger residual values than the Golf on which it is based. Which is exactly why it has been one of the UK’s best-selling premium cars for nearly three decades.
The Range
Four generations of A3 have covered hatchback, Sportback five-door, Cabriolet, Saloon, and e-tron plug-in hybrid body styles across a span from the original three-door 8L through to the current 8Y. Engines have ranged from economical 1.4-litre TFSIs to the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo in the RS3. The A3 has always been built on the VW Group’s A-platform, sharing architecture with the Golf, Seat León, and Škoda Octavia.
Buying
Choose a generation based on your priorities: the 8L for simplicity and affordability, the 8P for the sweet spot of quality and usability, the 8V for the cleanest design, the 8Y for the most sophisticated technology. In every generation, the S3 and RS3 add serious performance to the package.
