The C2 Audi 100, produced from 1976 to 1982, introduced the Avant estate body for the first time and expanded the engine range to include a turbodiesel; the first turbocharged diesel in a European production car. Both innovations proved more significant than anyone anticipated at the time.

The Car

The C2 used 1.6 and 2.0-litre four-cylinders alongside a 2.1-litre five-cylinder from 1977. The 5E five-cylinder in fuel-injected form produced 136bhp and gave the 100 a sporting character. The 1.6 turbodiesel of 1978 (a 70bhp five-cylinder diesel with turbocharging) was a world first for a European production car and established the technology that would define diesel passenger cars for the next four decades.

Today

The C2 is a classic car of historical interest. The turbodiesel pioneer status is the most significant fact about the range. The Avant is the more practical survivor. The Audi five-cylinder petrol models are the most rewarding to drive.
