The Aston Martin V8 was the car that kept the company alive through the 1970s and 1980s; a muscular, handmade grand tourer powered by Tadek Marek’s 5.3-litre all-aluminium V8 that remained in production in various forms for over two decades.

The Car

Produced from 1969 to 1989 across several series, the V8 used a quad-cam 5.3-litre engine producing between 310 and 436bhp depending on specification. The Vantage, with its blocked-off bonnet scoop and larger Weber carburettors, was the performance flagship. Quicker than a contemporary Ferrari Daytona, no less. William Towns styled the body, which was dramatic if not universally loved. The V8 Volante convertible was the most glamorous variant. Around 2,900 V8-series cars were built across all variants.

Buying

The engine is hand-assembled and powerful but demands specialist maintenance. Rust affects the steel body structure. The earlier fuel-injected cars are less characterful but more tractable in daily use.
