The Series 4 Lagonda was William Towns’s final word on the design he had created a decade earlier — a softening of the angular edges that some considered an improvement and others a dilution. Around 100 were built before production ended in 1989, making it the rarest of the regular-series Lagondas and, by most specialist accounts, the most sorted.

The Car

Towns returned to Aston Martin specifically to rework the Lagonda’s styling for its final years. The sharpest creases were softened. The pop-up headlamps were replaced by six fixed units in a reshaped nose. The waistline trim was removed. The result was a car that retained the wedge’s basic proportions but carried them with less aggression. The CRT instruments of the Series 3 were replaced by vacuum fluorescent gauges, which proved the most reliable digital instrumentation system the Lagonda ever received. The fuel-injected V8 carried over from the Series 3. Production ended in 1989 after approximately 100 examples.

Buying

Specialist Nick Mee notes that Series 4 values have been climbing steadily and the best examples can now reach significant sums. The combination of rarity, improved reliability, and final-production status supports this. The vacuum fluorescent instruments are the most dependable of any Lagonda variant and make the Series 4 the most straightforward to use daily. The softened styling remains divisive (purists prefer the Series 2’s uncompromising edges) but the Series 4 is unquestionably the most practical and reliable Lagonda. Structure, mechanical history, and instrument function remain the key inspection points for any purchase.
