The Series 3 Lagonda was the fuel-injected evolution of the wedge design, arriving in 1986 with the Weber-Marelli injection that finally brought the 5.3-litre V8 up to the standard of reliability the car’s price and prestige demanded.

The Car

The Series 3 retained the wedge body of the Series 2 but replaced the carburetted engine with a fuel-injected unit producing around 280bhp. The Weber-Marelli injection system improved throttle response, cold starting, and emissions compliance: all areas where the carbureted cars had frustrated owners. The instrument system continued with the CRT screens introduced on late Series 2 cars. Interior specification was updated with improved materials. A Tickford long-wheelbase limousine variant was available, and at least one shooting brake conversion was produced. The Series 3 was a relatively brief production run before the Series 4 arrived with further visual changes.

Buying

The fuel injection makes the Series 3 more tractable in daily use than the carburetted Series 2. The CRT instruments, while improved over the LED originals, still require specialist attention and sourcing correct replacements is challenging. The V8 is shared with contemporary Aston Martin products. Buy on documented history and electrical integrity above all. The Series 3’s modest production numbers and relatively short window between the Series 2 and 4 make it the least commonly encountered of the wedge variants.
