The Series 1 Lagonda was announced at the 1974 London Motor Show as Aston Martin’s first four-door saloon in over a decade — a conventional long-wheelbase car that nobody remembers, built in a quantity of seven, that existed primarily to keep the Lagonda name alive while the radical Series 2 was being developed.

The Car

Based on a lengthened version of the DBS platform, the Series 1 used the 5.3-litre quad-cam V8 in a four-door saloon body that William Towns designed with rather more restraint than the wedge shape he would produce two years later. The wheelbase was extended to 114.8 inches. A five-speed manual or Chrysler TorqueFlite three-speed automatic was offered. The interior was trimmed in leather with standard Aston Martin levels of quality. Just seven cars were completed before the project was abandoned in favour of the far more dramatic design that would appear at the 1976 show.

Today

With seven built, the Series 1 is among the rarest production Aston Martin cars of any era. It has none of the drama or technological ambition that makes the wedge-series Lagondas famous, but it is a genuinely rare and historically significant car — the first step in the Lagonda’s unlikely story. Any surviving example is of considerable interest to Aston Martin historians. The contrast with the Series 2 that followed could scarcely be greater.
