The DB6 is arguably the most sorted of the David Brown-era Astons: longer, more aerodynamic, and better equipped than the DB5 it replaced. It is also currently the most ‘affordable’ (relatively speaking, of course) of the three, which makes it the intelligent choice for anyone who wants to use their Aston rather than just admire it.

The Car

Produced from 1965 to 1970, the DB6 stretched the DB5’s wheelbase by 3.75 inches and added a Kamm tail with a truncated rear that improved high-speed stability. The no-cost Vantage engine option delivered 325bhp from the 4.0-litre straight-six with triple Weber carburettors. The Mk2 from 1969 brought wider rear wheels, flared arches, and power steering as standard. Around 1,330 DB6 coupes and 177 Volantes were built. The Mk2 Vantage Volante is the most desirable variant.

Buying

The DB6 offers the most Aston for the money in the David Brown range. The Kamm tail divides opinion aesthetically but works aerodynamically. How the car drives reflects its maintenance history more than the differences between DB4, 5, and 6 — a well-sorted DB6 is a wonderful thing. The DB2/4 preceded this family, and the V8-era V8 that eventually followed was a completely different car.
