The DB2 was the car that established Aston Martin as a serious constructor of grand touring cars. Designed under the ownership of David Brown (the DB in the name), it combined a powerful twin-cam six with elegant coachwork and genuine competition capability.
The Car
Produced from 1950 to 1953, the DB2 used a 2.6-litre twin-cam straight-six designed by W.O. Bentley (yes, that Bentley, he was working for Aston Martin at the time). The engine produced 105bhp in standard form and 125bhp in Vantage specification. The body was a fastback coupe with a large rear hatch. Around 410 were built. The DB2 achieved notable competition success, finishing first and second in class at Le Mans in 1950 and winning the Mille Miglia’s 3-litre class in 1951.
The DB2 was succeeded by the DB2/4, which added occasional rear seats and a more practical hatchback arrangement.
