The Ariel Nomad takes the Atom‘s philosophy of minimal weight and maximum sensation and points it off-road. The result is a lightweight, high-performance off-roader that can cross deserts, splash through rivers, and still drive home on the public road.
The Car
Produced from 2015 at Ariel’s Crewkerne factory, the Nomad uses a longer-travel suspension setup with Bilstein dampers, underbody protection plates, and chunky all-terrain tyres on a modified version of the Atom’s tubular spaceframe. The 2.4-litre Honda K-series engine produces 235bhp in a car weighing around 680kg. The Nomad 2, introduced in 2022, uses a supercharged 2.0-litre engine. Rally-style bucket seats with four-point harnesses are standard. The Nomad has competed in events including the Rallye des Cévennes and the Welsh Rally.
Buying
Nomads are even rarer than Atoms and command strong prices. Inspect the chassis and underbody protection for off-road damage. The Honda engine is reliable and well-supported. The Nomad is one of a tiny number of vehicles that can genuinely perform both on and off-road at a high level; it is not a compromised SUV but a purpose-built machine.
