The Amilcar CGS is one of the finest French light sports cars of the 1920s. Produced from 1923 to 1925, it offered genuine sporting performance from a tiny 1,074cc four-cylinder engine in a lightweight chassis that was designed from the outset for competition.

The Car

CGS stands for Course Grand Sport — the sporting version of Amilcar’s C-series. The side-valve four-cylinder engine produced around 30bhp, which in a car weighing barely 500kg gave sprightly performance. The boat-tailed body was typically aluminium over an ash frame. Amilcar dominated the 1,100cc class in French racing throughout the mid-1920s. The CGS was succeeded by the supercharged CGSS, which took the concept to its ultimate expression.
