The Alvis TD 21 was the model that gave the post-war Alvis its definitive shape. The Swiss coachbuilder Graber designed the body in 1955, and when Park Ward began producing it in England from 1958, the result was one of the most elegant British cars of the late 1950s.
The Car
Produced from 1958 to 1963, the TD 21 used the 3.0-litre six-cylinder in 104bhp standard and 115bhp (twin carburettor) form. Park Ward bodies (saloon and drophead coupe) were built to the Graber design with clean, continental lines. The all-synchromesh ZF gearbox was a significant improvement over earlier Alvis transmissions. A limited number of drophead coupes make them particularly desirable. Around 1,070 were built.
Today
The TD 21 represents Alvis at its post-war best. The Park Ward coachwork is elegant and well-made. Values have been rising as the quality and rarity of the model becomes better appreciated. The TE 21 that followed added more power and detail refinements but the TD 21 remains the most numerous post-war six-cylinder Alvis.
