The Alvis Speed 25 replaced the Speed 20 in 1936 and was Alvis’s definitive sporting model of the late pre-war period. With a 3.5-litre overhead-valve six producing around 110bhp, it could compete with Bentley and Lagonda for pace while offering the same quality of construction and coachwork.

The Car

Produced from 1936 to 1940, the Speed 25 used an enlarged engine with a cross-flow head similar to the 4.3 Litre. Independent front suspension was retained. Coachbuilders including Vanden Plas, Charlesworth, and Cross and Ellis bodied the Speed 25 in a variety of open and closed styles. An overdrive gearbox was available, improving long-distance cruising. Around 350 were built before the war ended production.

Today

The Speed 25 commands strong prices as the most developed sporting pre-war Alvis. Vanden Plas tourers are the most sought after. The Alvis Owner Club and Red Triangle provide excellent support. Any Speed 25 with continuous ownership history and documented coachbuilder provenance is a desirable collector’s car.
