The Alvis 4.3 Litre is the fastest pre-war Alvis and one of the fastest British cars of the 1930s. Its 4,387cc six-cylinder engine produced around 137bhp in standard form and could propel the car to 100mph; extraordinary for a large touring car in 1936.

The Car

Produced from 1936 to 1940, the 4.3 Litre used an overhead-valve six-cylinder with a cross-flow cylinder head; an advanced configuration for the period. The engine was available in standard and short-chassis form. Various coachbuilders bodied the 4.3 Litre, with Vanden Plas, Charlesworth, and Cross and Ellis among the most frequently chosen. The short-chassis 4.3 with its lightweight coachwork was capable of 110mph.

Today

The 4.3 Litre is a serious collector’s car. Competition history or documented provenance significantly increases values. The Alvis Owner Club and Red Triangle support the model well, though the 4.3’s engine is more complex than the smaller Alvis units. The Speed 25 used a smaller version of the same engine family and offers similar character at more accessible prices.
