The Alvis 12/50 was the car that established Alvis as a serious manufacturer — a sporting four-cylinder that combined overhead-valve engineering with a responsiveness and reliability that its contemporaries could rarely match. It was the model that put Alvis on the map and kept it there throughout the 1920s.

The Car

Produced from 1923 to 1932, the 12/50 used a 1,496cc overhead-valve four-cylinder — the first OHV engine to appear in a British sports car. Various body styles were offered by independent coachbuilders including tourers, saloons, and two-seaters. Power outputs ranged from around 50bhp in standard form. The 12/50 won the 200 Miles Race at Brooklands in 1923, establishing Alvis as a competition marque from the outset. Around 1,500 were built across the full production run.

Today

The 12/50 is a well-supported vintage car through the Alvis Owner Club. Pre-war Alvis parts availability is better than for most contemporaries. The engine is simple and robust. Body condition and timber framing integrity are the primary concerns on any surviving example.
