Alpina D3 Price Guide

The Alpina D3 is the finest diesel saloon ever produced. That statement may sound like marketing but is supported by the evidence. Alpina took BMW’s already-excellent 3 Series diesel and applied the same twin-turbo, limited-slip differential, bespoke suspension and exhaustive chassis calibration that makes the B3 special. The result is a car that outhandles most petrol sports cars, returns real-world fuel economy in the mid-40s mpg, and accelerates with a mid-range urgency that embarrasses its power output on paper.

The Range

The D3 has tracked the BMW 3 Series diesel across multiple generations. The E46 D3 of 2003–2005 used a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel producing 204bhp with a mechanical LSD. The E90 D3 BiTurbo arrived in 2007 with twin turbos and 255bhp; more than most petrol 3 Series of the era. The F30 D3 S BiTurbo pushed further to 355bhp from 2014, with 700Nm of torque available from just 2,000rpm. The G20 D3 S continues the formula with 355bhp, all-wheel-drive xDrive available, and the same Alpina treatment – staggered alloys, LSD, bespoke springs and dampers – applied to BMW’s latest diesel architecture. The D3 Touring estate in any generation is the most practical and arguably the most purposeful body style.

What to Know

DPF health is the primary concern on higher-mileage D3s used predominantly for short journeys. Alpina’s diesels need regular motorway use to keep the particulate filter functioning correctly. The twin-turbo setup on E90 and later cars requires fresh oil at the specified intervals; the turbos do not appreciate extended oil changes. Swirl flaps in the intake manifold on some diesel variants can fail and should be inspected. Alpina service history and Zertifikat documentation are particularly important on diesel models, where the engine calibration is specific to Alpina and requires knowledge that not all BMW dealers possess.

Buying

The F30 D3 S BiTurbo in Touring form represents the ideal intersection of practicality, performance, and running costs. Lower-mileage examples with Alpina service history are the specification to pursue. The diesel drivetrain means DPF condition matters more than on the B3. A full motorway run before purchase to check for DPF warning lights is a minimum requirement. The D3 remains the most sensible Alpina for anyone who covers high annual mileage and values fuel economy alongside performance.
