The Tonale is Alfa Romeo’s compact crossover, replacing the Giulietta in the lineup and marking Alfa’s entry into the electrified era with plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrains.

The Range

Launched in 2022, the Tonale uses the Fiat Group’s Small Wide platform shared with the Jeep Compass. Engine options include a 1.5-litre four-cylinder mild hybrid producing 130bhp or 160bhp, and a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.3-litre turbo with an electric motor for a combined 275bhp and Q4 all-wheel drive. The PHEV offers an electric-only range of around 50 miles on the WLTP cycle. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic handles the mild hybrid; the PHEV uses a six-speed automatic. An NFT-based digital certificate of the car’s maintenance history was a headline feature at launch, though its practical value remains debatable.

Buying

The Tonale is too new for long-term reliability data, but the underlying Stellantis platform is well-proven. The PHEV is the performance pick but only makes economic sense if you can charge regularly. The 160bhp mild hybrid is the pragmatic choice. Interior quality is a step forward from the Giulietta, though it still trails the best German rivals. The Tonale competes with the Volvo XC40, BMW X1, and the Stelvio within Alfa’s own range.
