The Duetto is the car that started it all: Pininfarina’s perfect round-tailed roadster, introduced in 1966, immortalised by Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, and now one of the most desirable Italian sports cars of the 1960s.

The Car

The name Duetto was chosen by a public competition that attracted over 100,000 entries — though Alfa officially only used it briefly before adopting Spider 1600 for the production car. Pininfarina styled and assembled the body. The 1570cc twin-cam produced 109bhp, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed gearbox. Fewer than 1,000 were built in right-hand drive, making these seriously collecable. In 1967, the 1750 Spider Veloce replaced the original with a 118bhp 1779cc engine and improved suspension and brakes. The 1300 Junior arrived in 1968 with the exposed headlamps that previewed the look of all subsequent Spiders.

Buying

The round-tail Duetto is the most valuable Spider. Condition is everything: rust has destroyed the majority of survivors and a full restoration can consume vast sums. The boat-tail body is six inches longer than the Kamm-tail that replaced it, which makes parking scrapes more likely but also gives the car its distinctive elegance. Many Alfisti prefer the 1750 engine for its additional torque and refinement. Stainless steel bumpers on the 1750 replaced the Duetto’s chrome items.
