The Phase 2 916 Spider arrived in 1999 with a modest power increase to 155bhp, a revised centre console, and detail improvements that addressed some of the Phase 1’s rougher edges.

What Changed

The Twin Spark engine gained 5bhp and improved mid-range torque through revised cam timing. The interior received a new centre console design and improved switchgear. From 2001, the 220bhp 3.0-litre Busso V6 24-valve finally became available in the Spider — years after it had been offered in the GTV coupe. The V6 came with a six-speed manual gearbox. Phase 2 V6 Spiders are exceptionally rare in the UK and have genuine collector potential.

Buying

Phase 2 cars are the most commonly available 916 Spiders, particularly the 2.0 Twin Spark models. They benefit from the revised cambelt change interval (36,000 miles) being established practice by this point in production. The hood mechanism is the same as the Phase 1 and carries the same spare-parts warning. Some owners argue the Twin Spark is the better engine for the Spider — lighter and giving better front-rear balance than the heavier V6, which can overwhelm the Tipo-derived chassis.
