The Junior Zagato is a lightweight, aerodynamic coupe designed by Ercole Spada at Zagato, based on the GT Junior platform. It took the 105-series mechanicals and wrapped them in a body of extraordinary visual drama — all curves, glass, and purposeful aggression.
The Car
Produced from 1969 to 1975, the Junior Z (as it is commonly known) was available with 1.3-litre (1969–1972) and 1.6-litre (1972–1975) twin-cam engines. The 1300 Junior Z accounted for 1,108 cars; the 1600 Junior Z for 402. The body was steel with an aluminium bonnet and boot lid. Perspex headlamp covers and a distinctive truncated tail gave the car an aerodynamic efficiency that allowed it to achieve higher top speeds than the heavier Bertone coupes despite using the same engines. The interior was simple and sporting.
Buying
The Junior Z is rare and increasingly valuable. The 1600 is scarcer and more desirable. Rust attacks the usual 105-series areas. The aluminium bonnet and boot do not corrode conventionally but suffer electrolytic corrosion at joints with the steel body. Perspex headlamp covers yellow with age and can crack. The Junior Z shares its engine and running gear with the standard GT Junior and the broader 105 family, so mechanical parts are readily available through the Spider and GTV specialist network.
