The Alfa Romeo GTA — Alleggerita, meaning “lightened” — is the competition-bred derivative of the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, and one of the most successful touring car racers of the 1960s. Aluminium body panels, magnesium engine components, and a twin-plug cylinder head transformed a road car into a weapon that dominated its class from the Nürburgring to Bathurst.
The Car
Produced from 1965 in tiny numbers for privateer racing teams, the GTA replaced the Sprint GT’s steel body panels with aluminium and substituted magnesium for the cam cover, timing cover, sump, clutch housing, and gearbox casing. The twin-plug cylinder head and revised intake manifold raised power from 106bhp to 170bhp in road trim. Weight dropped to around 745kg. Autodelta, Alfa’s competition department, prepared the race cars and coordinated the European Touring Car Championship campaign that brought multiple titles.
Buying
Genuine GTAs are extremely rare and valuable, operating in the six-figure-to-seven-figure range depending on provenance and competition history. Convincing replicas exist — some built from standard Sprint GTs with aluminium panels fitted — and expert verification is essential before committing to any purchase presented as a genuine GTA. The magnet test is the starting point (aluminium is non-magnetic) but a thorough inspection by a marque specialist is non-negotiable at this level.
