The Alfa Romeo GT was a coupe based on the 156 platform, styled by Bertone as a deliberate echo of the classic 105-series Giulia coupes. It was the last car Bertone designed for Alfa Romeo, closing a partnership that had produced the Sprint GT, the Montreal, and the Giulietta Sprint.

The Car

Produced from 2003 to 2010, the GT used the 156’s front-wheel-drive platform with a 50mm wider track and stiffer suspension. Engine options included the 1.8 and 2.0 Twin Spark, the 1.9 JTDm diesel, the 2.0 JTS (avoid), and the magnificent 3.2-litre Busso V6 producing 240bhp. The V6 was, alongside the 166, the last production car to use Busso’s engine, making it a significant car for Alfa historians. The Blackline and Cloverleaf special editions offered visual distinction. Around 81,000 GTs were produced.

Buying

The 1.9 JTDm is the sensible everyday choice. The 3.2 V6 is the collector’s pick. Transmission wise, manuals are the only wise choice. Selespeed actuators fail, and replacement is expensive. The Twin Spark engines need cambelt changes every 36,000 miles. Rust is less of an issue than on older Alfas thanks to galvanising, but inspect the platform underside carefully. The GT shares most of its mechanical components with the 156, so parts availability is reasonable.
