The GT Junior was the affordable entry point into Alfa Romeo’s 105-series coupe range — the car that gave young drivers their first taste of the twin-cam engine, the Bertone body, and the handling that made the Giulia family famous.
The Car
Introduced in 1966 with the 1290cc twin-cam producing 89bhp, the GT 1300 Junior used the same Bertone body as the Sprint GT and GTV but with a simpler interior and smaller engine. A 1600 Junior followed in 1972. The step-front bonnet on early 1300 Juniors gives them a visual connection to the Sprint GT that the later flat-nose cars lack. Despite the “budget” positioning, the Junior’s lighter engine actually improved the car’s balance, and many enthusiasts consider the 1300 the sweetest-handling 105 coupe of all.
Buying
GT Juniors were the most numerous 105-series coupes and are the most commonly available today. Values sit below the GTV models, making the Junior the most accessible route into Bertone coupe ownership. Rust is the same overwhelming concern as for all 105 cars. The 1300 engine is a jewel that loves to rev but lacks low-end torque — use the gearbox and it rewards you with a mechanical sweetness that larger-engined cars cannot quite replicate. The Junior shares everything except its engine with the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce and the 1750/2000 GTVs, so most parts interchange freely.
