The Alfasud Sprint is a Giugiaro-styled coupe based on Alfasud mechanicals, and it represents a compelling alternative to the saloon: the same brilliant boxer engine and handling in a more attractive body that enthusiast owners tended to look after far more carefully.

The Car

Launched in 1976 and produced until 1989, the Sprint used the Alfasud’s flat-four boxer engine in 1.3, 1.5, and 1.7-litre forms. The 1.7 Green Cloverleaf is the performance pick, with twin carburettors and 118bhp driving through the front wheels. Giugiaro’s three-door body aged well and still looks sharp. Later cars received fuel injection and improved build quality. The Sprint Veloce and 1.7 QV (Quadrifoglio Verde) are the most desirable variants.

Buying

Sprints survive in greater numbers than Alfasud saloons because their owners cared more. Rust remains the primary concern — check sills, floors, inner wings, and the area around the fuel tank. The flat-four powerplant is durable and characterful but its horizontal layout makes routine servicing more fiddly than a conventional inline engine. Carburettor cars can be tricky to set up; fuel-injected late models are more tractable. The Sprint shares its running gear with the saloon but the 33 that succeeded the Alfasud range used an evolved version of the same boxer engine family.
