The Alfa Romeo 90 was an attempt to bridge the gap between the ageing Alfetta and the forthcoming 164, using the Alfetta’s transaxle platform with restyled bodywork by Bertone. It was a stopgap that looked like a stopgap.
The Car
Produced from 1984 to 1987, the 90 used the Alfetta’s rear-mounted transaxle with twin-cam four-cylinder and Busso V6 engines. The 2.5 V6 was the most desirable variant. Bertone’s styling was conservative, lacking the drama of Cressoni’s subsequent work on the 75 that replaced it. Interior equipment was generous, with options including leather trim and electric seats. Approximately 56,000 were built.
Buying
The 90 is extremely rare in the UK. It appeals to dedicated Alfisti who appreciate the transaxle chassis and V6 engine in a car that costs a fraction of the 75 or GTV6. Rust is the primary concern. The gearbox shift quality was still hampered by the Alfetta’s long linkage — the 75 would finally fix this problem. Any surviving 90 is a genuine rarity worth preserving.
