The 2600 Sprint is a Bertone-styled grand tourer powered by Alfa Romeo’s 2,584cc inline-six engine — the final development of the DOHC six that began with the 2500 of 1946. It is one of the most elegant and mechanically sophisticated Alfas of the 1960s.
The Car
Produced from 1962 to 1966, the 2600 Sprint used the same inline-six as the 2600 Spider and the Berlina saloon, producing 145bhp with triple Weber carburettors. Bertone’s coupe body was longer and more flowing than the Spider, with proper 2+2 accommodation. Disc brakes at all four corners, a five-speed gearbox, and power-assisted steering were standard. Around 6,999 Sprints were built — considerably more than the rarer Spider.
Buying
The 2600 Sprint is rare but more accessible than the Spider. The inline-six requires specialist servicing — the triple Webers need sympathetic tuning and the overhead camshafts demand regular attention. Rust attacks structural areas. Interior quality is high, with leather and wood trim. The 2600 range was the last of the big, front-engined, rear-drive six-cylinder Alfas before the company pivoted to smaller cars and front-wheel drive with the Giulia and its successors.
