The Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider is a rare and elegant Touring-bodied convertible that represents the end of an era — the last of the big, six-cylinder front-engined Alfas before the company moved to smaller cars and front-wheel drive.
The Car
Produced from 1962 to 1965, the 2600 Spider used a 2,584cc inline-six engine producing 145bhp with triple Weber carburettors. Touring of Milan designed and built the body, which seated two in a cabin trimmed with leather and wood. Around 2,255 were produced. The 2600 range also included a Berlina saloon styled by Pininfarina and a Sprint coupe by Bertone. All used the same inline-six, the final evolution of Alfa’s large DOHC engine family that stretched back to the 2500 of 1946.
Buying
The 2600 Spider is a genuine rarity. Touring’s bodywork is hand-formed aluminium over a steel frame, and electrolytic corrosion between the dissimilar metals is a known weakness. The inline-six is robust but requires specialist servicing. Triple Webers need sympathetic tuning. Parts availability relies on the specialist Alfa network. The 2600 Spider preceded the Spider Duetto in Alfa’s open-car range but the two share nothing mechanically — the Duetto was a completely different, smaller, four-cylinder car.
