The Alfa Romeo 1900 was the car that transformed Alfa from a tiny artisan manufacturer into a volume producer. It was the first Alfa built entirely on a production line rather than by hand, and the first to use a monocoque body. Despite this industrial revolution, the 1900 retained everything that made Alfa special.

The Car

Launched in 1950, the 1900 used a new 1,884cc all-alloy twin-cam four-cylinder producing 90bhp in standard form and up to 115bhp in the Ti and Super Sprint variants. The factory Berlina saloon was a handsome, understated four-door. The platform attracted every major Italian coachbuilder: Touring, Pininfarina, Zagato, and Bertone all produced bodies on the 1900 chassis, and these coachbuilt variants are now among the most valuable Alfas of the era. Over 21,000 were built before the Giulietta replaced it in 1954.

Buying

The 1900 is a serious collector’s car. Standard Berlinas are the most accessible, while coachbuilt Sprints, Super Sprints, and Zagato specials command six-figure sums. The twin-cam engine is the direct ancestor of the unit that powered every subsequent Alfa through to the 75. Rust and structural condition are the primary concerns on monocoque cars. Any purchase requires specialist knowledge and thorough provenance verification.
