The facelifted 166, introduced in late 2003, softened the original’s angular nose into a more cohesive design and brought the 2.4 JTD Multijet diesel — the engine that accounted for the majority of European sales in the car’s final years.

What Changed

The front end was restyled with a deeper grille and revised headlights. The interior received updated materials and a redesigned centre console with improved ergonomics. The 2.4 JTD Multijet 20-valve diesel offered 175bhp with strong mid-range torque and reasonable refinement. The Busso V6 continued in 2.5 and, new for the updated 166, 3.2-litre forms. A six-speed manual gearbox was available on some variants, replacing the five-speed on earlier cars.

In the UK

The facelift JTD Multijet is the most numerous surviving variant on the Continent, while UK-based enthusiasts tend to seek out the V6 models. The 166 was the last Alfa Romeo to carry the Busso V6, and the facelift was the engine’s final home — making any 3.2 V6 166 the end of a line that stretches back through the 164, GTV, 75, and Alfetta GTV to the original Alfa 6 of 1979.
