The Alfa Romeo 155 won the 1992 British Touring Car Championship in the hands of Gabriele Tarquini, and the visual connection between the BTCC car and the road version was close enough to make every 155 owner feel like a racing driver. The reality was more nuanced.
The Car
Produced from 1992 to 1997, the 155 replaced the 75 and represented Alfa’s transition from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive for its saloon range. Based on the Fiat Tipo platform (shared with the Lancia Dedra and Fiat Tempra), it was available with 1.8 and 2.0-litre Twin Spark four-cylinders, a 2.5-litre Busso V6 with 163bhp, and the left-hand-drive only Q4 version which combined a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with permanent four-wheel drive for 187bhp.
Buying
The 155 is rare in the UK. The Q4 is the most sought-after variant, combining turbo power with four-wheel-drive traction. The 2.5 V6 sounds glorious but the front-wheel-drive chassis cannot fully exploit its power. Twin Spark cars are the most affordable, and the early chain-driven 8v’s are the enthusiast’s choice. Rust affects the platform in the usual areas. The 155 was succeeded by the 156, which was a dramatically better car in virtually every respect.
