The Alfa Romeo 146 is the sensible one in the family. Where the 145 was a dramatic three-door breadvan that polarised opinion, the 146 was a conventional five-door hatchback that attracted buyers who wanted Alfa character without quite so much visual drama.
The Car
Launched in 1995, a year after the 145, the 146 shared everything forward of the B-pillar with its three-door sibling: engines, gearbox, suspension, steering, and dashboard. The rear was entirely different, with a longer roofline, proper rear doors, and a more usable boot. The range-topping version was the 146 ti (rather than Cloverleaf), which received the same 2.0-litre Twin Spark, uprated brakes, quick-rack steering, and sport seats as the 145 Cloverleaf. The same transition from boxer to Twin Spark engines occurred in 1997. A 1.9 JTD common-rail diesel arrived with the 1999 facelift. Over 233,000 146s were built.
Faults
Identical mechanical concerns to the 145: cambelt changes every 36,000 miles on Twin Sparks, cam variator rattle on startup, oil consumption as a characteristic rather than a fault, and the airbag sensor recall. The 146’s rear door apertures add more seam area vulnerable to corrosion. The boot seal can leak, causing damp in the spare wheel well. Gearboxes on the older boxer engines can develop a whine — listen carefully during a test drive. Water pumps and radiators are weak spots across all variants. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and make sure the electric fan cuts in by leaving a warm engine idling during your inspection.
Buying
The 146 ti with the 2.0 Twin Spark is the pick of the range, offering the same mechanical package as the 145 Cloverleaf with more practical bodywork. Late cars with the 1999 facelift are the most refined. The 1.9 JTD diesel was competent but very few survive. The 146 was replaced by the 147, which used an entirely different platform but carried forward the Twin Spark engine family and the same basic formula of Italian style in a family hatchback package.
