The Abarth OT 2000 Coupé Periscopio is one of the most exotic and visually dramatic Abarths ever produced. The Periscopio name refers to the periscope-style rear-view system — a narrow slot in the rear bodywork with a mirror arrangement that replaced a conventional rear window, reducing drag and improving aerodynamic efficiency.
The Car
Built on the Fiat 850 platform with a radically modified body, the OT 2000 used a 1,946cc Fiat twin-cam engine producing around 185bhp in a car weighing approximately 700kg. The combination of genuine power and minimal weight made it devastatingly fast in its class. The periscope rear-view system was a characteristically inventive Abarth solution to the problem of combining low-drag bodywork with rearward visibility. Very few were built — production was measured in dozens rather than hundreds.
Buying
The OT 2000 Periscopio is a museum-grade collector’s car. Any surviving example is of extraordinary rarity and value. The competition history of these cars at events including Le Mans and the Nürburgring 1000km adds to their significance. The Periscopio represents the pinnacle of Abarth’s OT 1000-derived competition car programme.
