The Abarth OT 1000 was a competition coupe based on the Fiat 850, using a bored-out version of the rear-mounted engine in Abarth’s characteristic lightweight bodywork. OT stands for Omologato Turismo — homologated touring car.
The Car
Produced in small numbers from 1963, the OT 1000 used a 982cc engine derived from the Fiat 850’s unit, producing around 85bhp in race specification. The body was based on the Fiat 850 Coupe but with Abarth modifications for weight reduction and improved aerodynamics. The OT 1000 competed successfully in its class at events across Europe, including the Nürburgring and various Italian hillclimbs.
The OT 1000 sits alongside the OT 1300 and the spectacular OT 2000 Coupé Periscopio in Abarth’s range of Fiat 850-based competition cars, each using progressively larger engines in the same basic platform.
