The Abarth Grande Punto was the car that relaunched the Abarth brand in 2007, arriving a year before the more famous Abarth 500. It used a 1.4-litre T-Jet turbo producing 155bhp in a car based on the Fiat Grande Punto — a more practical and spacious platform than the 500 that would follow.
The Car
The Abarth Grande Punto offered genuine hot hatch performance from its 155bhp engine, with an esseesse upgrade kit raising power to 180bhp through a larger Garrett turbo, uprated intercooler, revised exhaust, and remapped ECU. The esseesse kit also added Eibach springs, Brembo brakes, and an Abarth-specific bodykit. A five-speed manual was the only transmission. Around 3,500 were sold in the UK during the car’s brief 2007–2009 production run.
Buying
The Grande Punto Abarth is now scarce. The esseesse-equipped cars are the most desirable. The 1.4 T-Jet engine is the same family that went on to power the 595 and is fundamentally robust. Cambelt changes, clutch wear, and suspension condition are the key checks. The Grande Punto body is more practical than the 500-based cars but less characterful — it is an Abarth for drivers who prioritise space and usability over style.
