The Abarth 850 TC was the intermediate step between the 750 and the legendary 1000 TC in Abarth’s programme of Fiat 600-based competition cars. The TC designation — Turismo Competizione — indicates a Group 2 touring car built for racing.
The Car
The 850 TC used an enlarged version of the Fiat 600’s rear-mounted engine, bored to 847cc. In road trim it produced around 52bhp; competition versions extracted considerably more. The car competed successfully in its class throughout the early 1960s. The bodywork was based on the standard Fiat 600 but lightened where possible, and the Abarth exhaust system with its distinctive finned silencer was a visual trademark.
Buying
Genuine 850 TCs are scarce. Any purchase requires expert verification of the Abarth components — engine, exhaust, and internal modifications. Fiat 600s converted to approximate 850 TC specification exist in greater numbers than genuine cars. Competition history and period documentation significantly increase value.
