The facelifted 595, produced from 2016 to 2024, is the version that sold in huge numbers and became one of the last great characterful combustion-engined small cars. Its demise marked the end of an era that no electric successor can fully replicate.

What Changed

New headlights and tail lights aligned the 595 with the facelifted Fiat 500. A seven-inch Uconnect touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto replaced the older unit. Power outputs settled at 145bhp (base), 165bhp (Turismo and Pista), and 180bhp (Competizione and esseesse). All 180bhp cars from 2018 onwards featured the switchable Record Monza quad-exit exhaust as standard. The Pista, a 2017 addition in matte grey with green accents, offered the 165bhp engine with a sportier visual package. The range-topping esseesse arrived in 2019 with an Akrapovic titanium exhaust tipped in carbon fibre, plus the option of the Performance Pack adding forged alloy wheels and a front mechanical LSD — the ultimate specification before the combustion 595 bowed out.

Buying

This is the 595 with the largest number of survivors and the broadest price range. Late Competiziones and esseesse models command premiums, particularly low-mileage cars with the Performance Pack. The Koni frequency-selective dampers on the Competizione genuinely improve the ride over UK roads compared to the standard springs — the smarter damping absorbs potholes more effectively despite the lower ride height. Super unleaded is recommended for 180bhp cars. The facelifted 595 sat below the 695 in the Abarth hierarchy — the 695 using the same 180bhp engine with additional chassis and cosmetic upgrades. Both were replaced by the electric 500e as the range transitioned to battery power.
