The Abarth 124 Spider is the performance version of the Fiat 124 Spider, itself a Mazda MX-5 ND in Italian clothing. Abarth added a larger turbo, stiffer suspension, a mechanical limited-slip differential, and the trademark Record Monza exhaust to create a roadster with genuine sporting credentials.
The Car
Produced from 2016 to 2019, the Abarth 124 used the same 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo engine as the Fiat version but tuned to 170bhp with a Garrett turbocharger replacing the Fiat’s smaller IHI unit. A six-speed manual was standard. The mechanical LSD was the crucial addition, transforming traction out of corners from the Fiat’s occasionally frustrating inside-wheel-spinning to something far more exploitable. Bilstein dampers and a 10mm drop over the Fiat completed the chassis changes. The Heritage Look with matte black bonnet and bootlid echoed the 124 Abarth Rally of the 1970s.
Buying
The Mazda underpinnings deliver dependability that the Abarth badge would not traditionally suggest. The MultiAir engine is well-proven. The exhaust valve actuator can stick open, causing the Record Monza system to drone at cruise — a minor irritation. The manual soft top is simple and reliable. Just over 41,000 124 Spiders were built across Fiat and Abarth versions combined; the Abarth is the rarer. The car competes directly with the 595 for Abarth enthusiasts’ affections, though it offers a completely different driving experience — rear-drive precision versus front-drive theatre.
