The Abarth 1000 TC is one of the most successful small-capacity racing cars of the 1960s. Based on the Fiat 600, with its engine bored and stroked to 982cc and tuned to produce up to 100bhp in race trim, it dominated its class at circuits across Europe for over a decade.

The Car

TC stands for Turismo Competizione — a Group 2 touring car category that allowed modified production cars to race. Carlo Abarth’s genius was extracting extraordinary power from the humble Fiat 600’s rear-mounted engine while retaining enough of the original car’s structure to meet homologation rules. The road-going versions produced around 60bhp, which in a car weighing just 580kg delivered genuinely rapid point-to-point performance. The Radiale variant with its distinctive radial-finned alloy cylinder barrel is the most sought-after specification.

Buying

Genuine 1000 TCs are rare and valuable. The car’s competition success means provenance and documentation are critical — a car with period race history commands a significant premium. Replicas and conversions from standard Fiat 600s exist, and expert verification is essential. The 1000 TC sits alongside the 850 TC in Abarth’s hierarchy of Fiat-based competition cars, both using the same basic rear-engined architecture pushed to its limits.
