The Fiat Uno of 1983 was European Car of the Year in 1984 and became one of the most commercially successful European cars of its decade. It was a Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed supermini of exceptional packaging efficiency that outsold the Ford Fiesta in several European markets. The Turbo i.e. version, with 105bhp from a turbocharged 1.3-litre, was the original hot supermini that established the template for the Peugeot 205 GTI’s competitors.
The Car
Giugiaro’s body used the maximum of the available dimensions, the Uno was genuinely class-leading in interior space for its external size. The 903cc, 1,116cc, 1,301cc, and 1,498cc engines covered the range. The Turbo i.e. from 1985 boasted a power-to-weight ratio that contemporary rivals could not approach. The Uno Turbo Racing of 1989 with 118bhp is the most collectible performance variant.
Buying
The Turbo i.e. is the collector’s Uno and values have been rising steadily. Standard 1.1 and 1.4 cars are affordable transport. Rust affects lower body and wheel arches on all surviving examples.
